What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?

A lot of readers would say The Great Gatsby.
It’s widely praised for its symbolism, style, and portrayal of the “American Dream,” but many people feel:
the characters are emotionally distant,
the plot is relatively thin,
and the hype from school curricula makes expectations unrealistically high.
Another common pick is Moby-Dick. Some readers love its depth and obsession-driven narrative, while others struggle with the long whale-classification sections and pacing.
A more controversial answer is The Alchemist. It has inspired millions, but critics argue its life philosophy is overly simplistic and repetitive.
On the other hand, books can feel “overrated” mainly because they become cultural monuments. Once a book is treated as a masterpiece for decades, readers expect a life-changing experience instead of simply a good book.
A classic I personally see people divided on is On the Road — some experience it as liberating and energetic, while others see it as directionless and self-indulgent.
What’s one classic you tried to read but couldn’t connect with?
